MarViva Foundation strengthens its regional management
MarViva Foundation consolidates its focus in the Tropical Eastern Pacific by strengthening regional coordination among the three core countries of its operation: Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. MarViva also expands its reach into Central and South America, through partnerships with organizations and institutions that promote the conservation and sustainability of marine resources.
"The management of the seas is a regional issue, because we are not isolated. Our efforts produce better results if we work in the oceans with a collaborative, multi-sectoral and international perspective", said Dr. Jorge Arturo Jiménez, Regional Director of MarViva.
In addition to its usual geographical area, concentrated in the Pacific of Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia, the Foundation signed an agreement with the Central American Commission of Maritime Transport (Cocatram), in order to implement joint actions to combat illegal fishing from Central American ports, strengthen coordination and training in institutions related to maritime affairs, and exchange scientific and technical information. MarViva also formalized an alliance with the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS) to promote similar actions and expand the scope of its proceedings from Costa Rica to Chile. A process to promote a model of governance and sustainable management of marine areas in international waters was also initiated, with expected impact from Panama to southern Mexico.
MarViva, created in 2002, promotes participatory and multi-sectoral initiatives in three strategic axes: improving regulatory framework, marine spatial ordering, and development of sustainable markets and strengthening state and local capabilities.
"We seek to optimize the experience and strength of our work team, profiting from the vision and integrity that the international structure allows. The regional operation requires close interaction and coordination. We have established Regional Offices to lead each of our programs: Sustainable Markets, Communication, Advocacy Work, Science and Community. They will work directly with one Regional Office, in a more compact organizational structure, allowing greater cohesion and effectiveness of our human and financial resources", said Jiménez.
"We are very pleased with our achievements after 11 years of operation. The authorities and the public are increasingly interested and aware of the challenges and opportunities for conserving the sustainability of habitats and marine and coastal ecosystems, which are a source of natural wealth, employment and food for society. However, much remains to be improved to achieve a real sustainable management of marine resources in the region. We are confident that our new structure and geographic expansion will help meet these challenges with even greater efficiency and effectiveness”, Jiménez finalized.
